Bring your family and friends to Smith Mountain Lake on November 27th and get in the holiday spirit by participating in the 2010 Virginia Dare Flotilla for Toys Boat Parade. Come on out to see boats decked out for the holiday season with lights and displays.

The event is held every year as a local toy drive for “A Child’s Christmas” sponsored by Lake Christmas Ministries. The parade hours are from 7pm to 9pm, with the boats leaving Virginia Dare Marina at 7pm. They will travel to Halesford Bridge at Bridgewater Plaza, circle past the Smith Mountain Lake State Park and return to Virginia Dare Marina.

Captains and crew members are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy as a donation. If you’re just coming to watch the parade, you can donate through local businesses. There will also be collection jars throughout Smith Mountain Lake, with proceeds going to purchase more toys for the drive.

If you don’t have a boat, join everyone on the lead boat in the parade, the Virginia Dare. Adults are $35.00 and kids 12 and under are $25.00. Thomas Jefferson Wine Festival in Forest VA

Not far from Smith Mountain Lake, on November 20th, you can enjoy the second annual Thomas Jefferson Wine Festival in Forest, Virginia. Held at Thomas Jefferson’s retreat, Poplar Forest, the event highlights some of the best wines in Virginia. The former president was well known for his passionate beliefs in the benefits of wine drinking. Come celebrate this famous politician and statesman with us!

The festival will run from 11am through 5pm on November 20th. “Mr. Jefferson” will be there as well to interact with visitors. You can also enjoy tours of Jefferson's home at Poplar Forest. The retreat is a true masterpiece, reflecting some of the best of Jefferson’s work in architecture. The home and grounds are clear expressions of his personal work and style.

There will be over a dozen wineries and food vendors at the festival. The wineries from the Bedford Wine Trail will be featured as well. Crafters will also have their works available, from beeswax candles to specialty chocolates. So come on out and enjoy a day of wine, history, music and artisans!

Advance tickets are available now and can be purchased online as well. Tickets are $20 in advance for a taster ticket, and $25 the day of the event. Non-taster tickets are $10, with children under 12 admitted free. A taster ticket includes a commemorative wine glass and wine tastings. Adults will be asked to show proof of age.

Poplar Forest is only open to the public April through November each year. Plan now to visit the retreat on November 28th for a holiday tour featuring holiday traditions from the 19th century, with apple cider and cookies being served. The site will close for the season on November 29th.

"Lake Effects" filming at Smith Mountain Lake

Film crews shooting the movie Lake Effects here at Smith Mountain Lake hoped to capture the lake's many activities the area has to offer. Many of the background scenes were shot in late June with the movie's primary plot being shot in October. Some Smith Mountain Lake residents were even part of the action.

Aerial shots were taken in a helicopter piloted by Lee Hussy of Penhook, capturing the many boats on the lake as well as wakeboarding. Then they moved on to Penhook Boat Dock on a boat owned by Bill Timmins, where extras Harper Lee Dillon and father Reed Dillon were filmed feeding the fishes at the marina gas dock.

Shooting also took place at Dam Island where John and Tanya Doss of Harrisonburg and their daughters Kayleigh and Madison were featured in a family picnic scene. Playing the part of their family dog was Keely, a rescue dog owned by Rick and Nancy Ellet of Moneta. Kids playing around the lake's many docks and the lakeside Tiki Bar near R11 are also of local interest.

The movie is in its last week of filming with Sunday, Oct. 31st. scheduled to be the last day. Meanwhile you can find the movies Director Michael McKay and his crew at Fallon's Restaurant in Moneta. The movie, which stars Jane Seymour and other familiar faces, is due to be out sometime next year.

Good Old Hospitality for Film at Smith Lake Mountain

Whether you live in the area, or are visiting to see the filming of Lake Effects set at or around Smith Mountain Lake, use good old hospitality and etiquette when near the set.

Here are some tips you can follow.

For Spectators:

• Stay off the set. If you come across the perimeter of a shoot, don’t cross it. There’s a lot of equipment on set and a spectator could trip over cords and be injured. Equipment is expensive and if broken can delay filming.

• Be quiet. If you’re watching either from land or water, keep noise to a minimum. Sound equipment is very sensitive and can pick up whispering and talking. Boaters the key word is “idle”. A revving boat can ruin a scene.

• Respect the Actors. If you see them in a restaurant eating dinner assess the situation before approaching. They are not performing at this time and boundaries should be respected. Otherwise, take a quick moment to ask for their autograph, most are glad to be approached.

For Extras:

• Turn off cell phones and pagers. If they ring or beep during filming the scene may have to be reshot. Also, no talking. During the scenes you should pretend to talk and not actually vocalize anything.

• Be careful of your wardrobe. A plain or solid colored shirt is best. No logos as these would have to be edited out due to trademark infringement.

• Respect the actor’s when they are working. They are getting paid for this time and it’s not polite to pull out your autograph book. Also remember the cast and crew always eats first during meals.

Bedford, Virginia seems to always have something on the calendar that's fun to do, and October is no exception. You’ll be amazed at the things to do in Bedford, VA! From family fun to “unliving” history, it is a great time to visit!

There are several different mazes to choose from in the area. Through October 31st, you can head out to the Corn Maze at Morgan Farm. They are open seven days a week, and have a pumpkin patch, too. The MAIZE at Layman Family Farms is fun for all ages! You can enjoy a hayride, or pick out the perfect pumpkin, before you head out to get lost in the maze! Smith Mountain Lake Fall Chili and Craft Festival November 6

Grab a bowl and spoon, and get ready to dig in! It is time for the 8th Annual Smith Mountain Lake Fall Chili and Craft Festival! Come join us lakeside on November 6th, for a full day of fun by the water. It will be a "hot" time in Smith Mountain Lake, depending on how spicy you like your chili!

The chili cook off will start at 9am, when competitors start cooking up a whole mess of chili! Tasting will begin at noon, with judging starting at 3pm. Trophies will be handed out around 4pm, with awards going to such categories as "Best Chili," "People's Choice," and "Showmanship." The event will be held lakeside, at the Bridgewater Plaza in Moneta.

If you want to get in on the cooking, you can get your Official Contestant Application at the Chamber of Commerce website. All entries need to be received no later than 5pm on October 29th. The festival opens to the public at 11am and runs through 4pm. There will be lots of good music, with band like the Harmoneers Waterfront 4 Quartet, and Kyle Edgell. Whether you like mild, hot, or atomic chili, there is something for every chili lover.

Buying a Smith Mountain Lake Home After Foreclosure

In 2009, foreclosures totaled over 2.8 million homes. In 2010, the predicted numbers are even higher; close to 3 million homeowners may face foreclosure. So what does that mean for the people who lost their homes due to the downturn in the economy? One of the valid questions is, “How long before I can become a homeowner again?” Fortunately, it may be sooner than some realize.

Losing your home to foreclosure can be heart-wrenching, but there is light at the end of the tunnel! While some who have been through it believe they have to wait up to seven years before trying to buy again, in actuality, you may be eligible for a FHA loan three years after foreclosure. If they required previous homeowners to wait seven years, the housing market may never recover.

Here are a few facts about qualifying for an FHA loan after foreclosure. You do have to wait until three years after your foreclosure is finalized. Your credit score will be reviewed, and in most cases, a minimum score of 620 needs to be maintained. Even if you have faced more financial difficulties since the foreclosure, don’t assume you are out of luck. Talk to a mortgage professional to explore your options.

A Word Of Caution

While you may be able to get a loan sooner than three years after foreclosure, the high-risk lenders will limit your options. High-risk lenders often charge very high interest rates and fees, thus turning you quickly upside down, once again, on a home. If you can, wait at least 24 months before considering buying a home. If you must buy sooner, 12 months of improvement on your credit history can make a big difference in the interest rate you will receive.

Having a home foreclosed on is life changing. In most cases, the foreclosure was unavoidable, due to job loss, a cut in pay, or serious illness. Poplar Forest: Thomas Jefferson’s Second Home

Many people own a second home, a place to get away from all the daily stresses of life. There are many families who own such a home in Smith Mountain Lake, but they aren’t the first to be drawn to this part of Virginia. While most people know about Monticello, not everyone is familiar with Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s second home.

Poplar Forest was a personal retreat for Jefferson. He only designed two homes for himself, Monticello and Poplar Forest. The retreat was nearly lost after years of decline, but in 1984, a group determined to save the retreat. They purchased the 50 acres remaining from the more than 4,000 acres that were originally part of the estate. Conservation and restoration have transformed Poplar Forest, and visitors can now enjoy seeing a part of American history.

The home is the only octagonal brick house completed by Jefferson. His architectural design for the home was amazing in its time; the construction boasts floor-to-ceiling windows for circulation, skylights, and even an indoor bathroom. Jefferson used the property throughout his retirement years.

A major part of the restoration is based on the archeology of the grounds, restoring the home and gardens to their condition in Jefferson’s time. That process is ongoing today. On October 9th, you can hear the latest findings at Poplar Forest. The Archeology Open House will host tours at 11:15am, 12:15 pm, and 2:15 pm. Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival is Finally Here!!

It is that time of year again! The Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival 2010 is finally here! This event is one of the most popular with visitors, so if you have been looking for a great excuse to get away to Smith Mountain Lake, this is it! Wineries come from all over the state of Virginia to offer you samples of their best wines.

This year’s festival is on September 25th and 26th at the LakeWatch Plantations in Moneta, Virginia. The festival hours are 11am – 6pm on Saturday and 11am – 5pm on Sunday. You can try wines from 27 of the best Virginia wineries. There are taster and non-taster tickets available, so if you do plan on sampling a lot of wine, bring a designated driver. Also don’t forget your ID; you will be asked to prove that you are of legal drinking age. Without your ID, you won’t be able to sample all the fabulous wines!

There will be 85 craft and food booths throughout the grounds, as well. You can also take in the three live bands that will be entertaining festival goers. Barefoot West and Burning Bridges will take the stage on Saturday; Sunday’s entertainment will be Barefoot West again, and The Worx. Great wine, good food and good music – ddoes it get any better than this?

The LakeWatch Plantation is located directly of Route 122 and about one mile south of Hales Ford Bridge. This is definitely a weekend not to miss! There will even be free parking. The event benefits the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce.

There is a new restaurant on Smith Mountain Lake, offering a new kind of dining experience; tapas-style dining. The Small Plates Restaurant offers small plates with BIG taste in Huddleston, VA. Located in Sportsman Marina, the restaurant opened on Memorial Day, and is going strong.

Tapas-style dining is very popular and usually can only be found in larger cities. The concept of this type of dining is to try various small, appetizer-sized dishes so you can enjoy several different flavors and foods at one time. Sharing tapas with a friend is highly encouraged! It allows the diner to experience new foods without fear. It is a great way to expand your culinary experience!

Small Plates also has both indoor and outdoor bars. The Dam Bar is located below the main dining area. Guests can enjoy music and dancing on Friday and Saturday evenings. The outdoor R11 Tiki Bar is on the shoreline, and serves lunch and dinner all week. The Tiki Bar is popular among boaters. It also has live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

The menu ranges from beef and poultry dishes, to seafood. Small Plates Chef Justin Fada, has been receiving rave reviews from customers. Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour

If you have ever had the chance to visit Smith Mountain Lake, you know why it is called the “Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains.” There are some beautiful luxury waterfront homes along the shore. If you have always wondered what they are like inside, you will soon have the chance to see some of them. October 1st and 2nd will be the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour.

The tour has its roots in the 1991 SML Multiple Sclerosis Home tour, set up by Jeanne Wagoner. They hoped to raise at least $10,000 for the charity, by allowing a tour of their homes. To everyone’s amazement, over 1,200 people attended the tour, and over $49,000 was raised by auction items, ticket sales, and sponsors. Nineteen years later, the tour is still going strong, with eight homes participating this year.

One of the things that makes this home tour so unique, is the fact that you can take the tour by boat, or by car. Directions for getting to the homes by either means are available on the tour website. The docks are marked by orange balloons, and there will be someone there to help you dock your boat. That sure hasn’t stopped locals and visitors from flooding the establishment. You can’t find a better climate for a drive-in! Few to no mosquitoes, perfect weather, and enjoying a good movie with your convertible's top down make this something that definitely should be added to your summer “to-do” list! And that's just the environment; then there is the food at the diner.

“We make everything homemade. Our homemade chicken salad and the macaroni salad are both customer favorites,” said Gentry. “I make a special butterscotch pie, and our house dressing is a homemade recipe. We have a lady that comes and makes fried green tomatoes from scratch.” They even offer a call-ahead service, so that customers avoid missing any of the movie by having their food ready when they get there.

Music in the Park will start at 8pm, and last until 10 that evening. Head over to the Smith Mountain Lake Beach pavilion for some great music, and dancing fun! Charlie Greer and the Roanoke Valley Pickers will be providing the foot stompin’, good-time music, and the Old Dominion Cloggers will be on hand to entertain.

You can bring your own food to enjoy, or indulge in ice cream, sausages, hot dogs and other refreshments that will be sold at the event. Children 12 and under get in free, and adult admission is only $5. Music in the Park is sponsored by the Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park.

Fourth of July Fun in Bedford, VA

If you are looking for Fourth of July fun in Bedford, you will actually have to start looking on July 3rd! Many of the holiday activities will fall on Saturday this year. There are lots of things to do and see. You can start your day at Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia retreat.

The Independence Day Celebration at Poplar Forest will start at 11am. There will be musical performances, dancing, and games. You can also step back in time with historical entertainers, storytelling, and living history demonstrations. Admission is $5.00 for adults, and young people under 16 get in free. At 1:30pm, there will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence. What a great way to start your celebration of freedom!

You can also celebrate by remembering the sacrifices that have been made for our freedom. The National D-Day Memorial will be open until 5pm on July 3rd. You can view fireworks that evening from the Centertown Bedford or Liberty Lake Park.

If you are going to be in the Smith Mountain Lake area, the Annual Smith Mountain Lake Fireworks and Fire Company Fund Raiser will be held on Saturday. We have always said Smith Mountain Lake is a magical place – the jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains! This past weekend, people found out dreams DO come true on Smith Mountain Lake. 48 lucky families purchased condos available at Bridgewater Pointe for amazing prices! All 48 units were sold by Prudential Waterfront Properties in one day.

In what was undoubtedly the opportunity of a lifetime, the condos were available to purchase through a buyers lottery. For $5,000, you could put your name in for a chance to buy one of the condos. If your number was drawn on June 27th, you were able to pick your condo! If your name wasn’t drawn, the $5,000 was returned.

They expected about 100 people to participate in the lottery. Over 300 folks actually showed up! Those who were lucky enough to have their number drawn, walked away with their very own Smith Mountain Lake condo. They have 30 days to arrange their financing and close on the property.

Wreath Ceremony Memorial Day
At the National D-Day Memorial, they will be holding a "Remembering Their Sacrifice" ceremony. There will be free admission from 10 am until noon with the laying of the wreath beginning at 11am. This is all leads up to the 66th Anniversary of D-Day on June 6th. There will be tours throughout the day. In the evening, the Memorial will remain open with a special nighttime illumination honoring the sacrifice that was laid down in Normandy 66 years ago and to give tribute to the veterans who survived.

Event Leading To Memorial Day
Of course Memorial Day means lots of backyard barbeques and fun activities! If you are looking for some great food and a good time don't miss the Second Annual Crawfish Festival at the Bower Center! The festival begins at 5:30pm on May 29th. At last year's event, festival goers downed over 1200 pounds of crawfish, gumbo and crawfish eutoffee with red beans and rice! Time for Franklin County Pigg River Ramble

We told you about it way back in January so you would have plenty of time to make plans to visit Smith Mountain Lake and enjoy the 9th Annual Pigg River Ramble. Well, just in case you forgot, the Ramble is next weekend May 14th through 16th. It will be a fun time for the whole family!

It all starts with the Blackwater Blackout on May 14th. Registration, music and food are scheduled for 5pm- 7pm. The Blackout begins at 7pm. Boats and other means of water transportation will only be allowed to light the way with non-electrical sources of light. You will see them adorned with everything from flashlights to glow sticks. The first 300 participants registered will receive a free t-shirt commemorating the event!

On Saturday the 15th, the Pigg River Ramble begins! The race starts at 10:30am and floaters start at 11:20am. This is an eight mile race ending with a barbeque and post race fun at Waid Park. You can end your weekend with Breakfast on the Blackwater. This is a three mile float with breakfast served about 45 minutes after the start. Enjoy a beautiful riverside breakfast!

Time to Brawl on Smith Mountain Lake

It’s finally here! This weekend the Blue Ridge Brawl will be held on Smith Mountain Lake! April 15th -18th top anglers from across the US will converge on Parkway Marina in Huddleston to fight for top honors at this Bassmaster Elite tournament. There will also be activities for the whole family to enjoy.

There will be free parking for the event and you take can advantage of a complimentary water shuttle between Bernard’s Landing and the Parkway Marina. The water shuttle will run from 2pm – 6pm on Friday and noon – 6pm the rest of the weekend.

Wear your college colors on Friday and show your school pride. A special tribute to Virginia Tech is scheduled and a Corn Hole Competition should add to the fun. Saturday you can check out taxidermy, trapping, fishing, hunting, and shooting. A Blue Ridge Brawl Karaoke Contest will be held with “open mic”, so break out your favorite bluegrass tunes! Also on Saturday a youth casting competition and a youth fishing tournament will be held

Fish Like the Pros youth fishing contest gives the kids a chance to compete! The categories run from ages 5 to 15 years of age and registrations starts at 9am. The first 200 to register for the tournament will also receive a free t-shirt. All youth 15 and under will also receive a free lunch.

Living History in Bedford, VA

Bedford Virginia is a place full of history. This weekend, April 10th and 11th, you can experience living history as the National D-Day Memorial Foundation presents Prelude to Invasion. Historical interpreters and the 29th Living History Association will be enacting what life was like for American servicemen as they prepared for D-day.

On Saturday the event will run from 10am until 5pm. They will be recreating a World War II encampment. Included in the re-enactment will be military vehicles, military gear, and other period vehicles. You can feel the morale of the men as they prepared for war.

Sunday you can experience a Soldiers Worship Service at 10am. Faith played a big role for many of our men and women in uniform. The 29th Living History Association will conduct a field service similar to the ones that were held as the men waited to begin the invasion of Normandy.

If you have always wanted to know more about military life during World War II, you don’t want to miss this event. Come out and honor the men and women who have served our country in times past. It is that time of year! April 7th, you can start enjoying the wildlife of Smith Mountain Lake aboard the Virginia Dare! On the first Wednesday of each month, you can learn about the local wildlife while enjoying a cruise on the Lake! You can learn about the flora and fauna of the area and even learn a little more about Smith Mountain Lake State Park!

On the Wildlife Wednesdays, a Smith Mountain Lake State Park nature interpreter will be on board to help narrate the noon cruise! Cruises leave the dock at noon on Wednesday and boarding starts at 11:30am. You can choose to cruise for lunch or just as a sightseeing tour.

The Virginia Dare will also be hosting an Easter Cruise this year. Spend the afternoon with the Easter Bunny out on the water! A meal is included in the ticket. Bring your camera and your little ones and they can have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny!

Jefferson’s Retreat Opens for the Season in Forest, VA

April 1st marks the season’s opening day at Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s villa retreat. Located a little over 30 miles from Smith Mountain Lake, this historical landmark is a look into the person who was Thomas Jefferson versus the President Thomas Jefferson. You can see the artifacts and hear the history of what happened after he left Washington.

Designed by Jefferson himself, Poplar Forest is said to be one of his greatest architectural accomplishments. Meticulous restorations have pulled this beautiful treasure back from the edge of ruin. It isn’t just the home being restored; the landscaping is being brought back to its original glory as well.

Using today’s science and technology, landscape archeologists are piecing together what the lawns may have looked like when Jefferson resided here. There are only a few drawings of the farm during that time period. By using soil samples, lab analysis, and excavation they soon hope they will be able to restore the landscape and lawns to their original design!

Just take one look outside and you can see that spring is making its debut in Smith Mountain Lake! This weekend the weather will be sunny and warm with temperatures in the 70’s forecasted. Take advantage of the beautiful weather and spend some time outside spring cleaning! With the unusually heavy snowfall this year, you may find a few more things on your spring to do list, especially if you have your home for sale!

Step One: Clean up debris! Living in the Blue Ridge Mountains can pretty much guarantee you have some leaves and sticks to clean up from the yard. While this may seem like a small thing, having a neat yard free of clutter and debris can make a big difference in your home’s curb appeal. Don’t forget to clean out from under ornamental bushes or hedgerows to give your lawn a well manicured look!

Step Two: Check your plants! Heavy snow can damage your shrubs and bushes. Now is a great time to see how they really fared over the winter. Check for any breaks or splits in the trunk or main branches. You may be able to save any damages shrubs with some creative trimming, but you may just need to replace it. Do your best to match the new plant by size and shape to the one you are removing! It may cost a little more, but it will keep the mature landscaping look you are trying to maintain.

Lastly, make any repairs needed to the exterior of your home. From sidewalks to a new coat of paint, keeping the outside of your home in tip top shape will make your home stand out above the rest. Take the whole family to the Hot Shots Family Fun center on Saturday, March 13th for a St Patty’s Day themed day of fun. There will even be live music by the band Dragonfly! If you are looking for something a little more adult, head over to The Landing for their St Patrick’s Day party! They will have drink specials and live entertainment!

On March 17th you will find green galore throughout Smith Mountain Lake! You can start out the morning at the Bluebird Bakery and Grill for some green eggs and fried green tomatoes for breakfast. If you are more in the mood for lunch several are restaurants are offering up the traditional corned beef and cabbage in honor of the day!

The Blackwater Café will be serving special Irish beers on March 17th. They will also have Irish fare on the menu; Shepherd’s Pie, corned beef, and a seafood medley! Over at Bruno’s you can even try some Guinness Stew and fish-n-chips.

Over at Finz Bar and Grill, you can dance the evening away with Irish music, Irish food and drink specials! If you haven’t swung by the Jefferson Center in Roanoke for awhile, you have a great excuse to do that on March 12th! Blue Highway will be celebrating their 15th anniversary with a night of music at the Jefferson’s Shaftman Performance Hall. It will be quite a show!

Blue Highway has a big following in bluegrass and other music genres. Beyond bluegrass, they will also be performing some Gospel music favorites and original work as well. But don’t expect just music! There is usually a good bit of humor thrown in to the mix as well. You can even purchase a VIP pass for a meet and greet with the band!

If humor is what you want then laughs is what you’ll get at the Big Lick Conspiracy show on March 13th at 8pm. Roanoke’s only improve group operates without a net! No script, no set and no costumes! Last post we started a House Hunting 101 refresher course for those who are in the hunt for the perfect home! Whether you are looking for a waterfront property on Smith Mountain Lake or a farm in the Virginia countryside, these are some basic tips to remember when you are out home shopping. Hopefully they will help you avoid some pitfalls along the way. Let’s jump right back in!

Lesson#3: Wait for the home that you really want! No one will argue with you that house hunting can be a roller coaster of emotions. Sometimes those emotions get the best of you and you just want to buy a house, any house, and be done with it. STOP! Take a moment, take a deep breath and remind yourself, you will be living in this home for the foreseeable future. Isn’t finding a home that fits your family’s lifestyle the reason you are house hunting in the first place? Don’t settle for a property that doesn’t meet any of your criteria. There are some things you will have to give up, but overall the home should be what you are looking for!

Lesson #4: Don’t procrastinate on making an offer! Now this may sound like it is a complete contradiction to Lesson #3, but it isn’t! If you have found a home that meets most of your checklist of wants and needs, don’t wait too long before making an offer! Unless you are building a custom home, most existing houses are not going to meet every need that you have. The key to being successful in this is having a firm idea of what you must have in a property!

When you started your hunt, your real estate agent more than likely asked you what you are looking for. Don’t just brush the question off! Sit down and consider what you can and can’t live without. What are you willing to compromise? What is an absolute necessity? Knowing these things before you start house hunting will be a time saver when trying to determine if you should make an offer on a specific home.

Virginia House Hunting 101 in Smith Mountain Lake Part 1

There are many reasons why now is a good time to buy a house. Just to mention a few; interest rates are still at historic lows and there is time left to take advantage of the Home Buyers Tax Credit on that new Smith Mountain Lake home. But as you are looking for a home, there are a few things you should remember amid the excitement of the hunt! If you are in need of a House Hunting 101 refresher course, take notes!

Lesson #1: Don’t look at homes that are outside of your price range! This may seem like a no brainer, but from the current foreclosure rate, it would seem it bears repeating! When property values were high and mortgages easy to come by, there were many home owners who bought more house than they could really afford. This left many with no wiggle room in their budget for surprise expenses such as an increase in property taxes. Add to that a drop in property values and you begin to see why the housing bubble burst.

The simple way to avoid this pitfall is to not look at homes that are beyond your price range. You have to remember you are not just paying an extra $7000 on a home; you will also be paying interest on that $7000 for the next 30 years! A good real estate agent won’t send you listings that are completely out of your price zone. If by some chance you do end up with such a listing, RESIST THE URGE TO CHECK IT OUT! It will only cause heartache, because the homes in your range may seem unsatisfying once you have seen what you can’t have.

Lesson #2: Avoid thinking you are Ty Pennington when you are not! We all have talents. If your talent lies somewhere other than being a handyman, do not buy a “fixer upper” that needs major renovations. Well, that is unless you are going to pay someone else to do the work. It is very tempting to try and take on a home that is priced low and needs a lot of work.

Sometimes the issue is having time to do the repairs more than IF you can do them. Take a real inventory of what the home needs and consider the time, talent and cash it will take to make it the home you want it to be. Don’t forget to factor in the expense of living somewhere else while the work is being completed.

Believe it or not we are just a few short days away from February! It seems like it was just last week we were enjoying the fun of the fall harvest! Now we are already turning a longing eye towards spring with summer just a few months away! If you want to visit Smith Mountain Lake this year, it is never too early to start planning! So here are some highlights of what’s coming up for the spring and early summer this year!

Make your reservations early for the ESPN Bassmaster Elite Tournament: Blue Ridge Brawl! The big event takes place April 15-18, 2010. Hotels fill up early for this one, so make your reservations soon! It is the “can’t be missed” event of spring! Weigh-in will be at the Parkway Marina in Huddleston, VA! And you might just hear more than just fish stories at the tournament! It was at the 2009 Blue Ridge Brawl the The Southern and Southwest Virginia Fishing Trail had its big premier!

Another event not to be missed is the 9th Annual Pigg River Ramble! Scheduled for May 14-16th, the weekend begins with a special Friday night fun float on the Blackwater River. Saturday brings the Pigg River race! You have to be ready for adventure if you are going to take on the 7 ½ mile race. There are no guarantees that you’ll make it over Pigg River’s well known “Ledge”! Great food and family fun will be abundant!

And of course we can’t forget Bluegrass Music! Festival in the Pines will be held April 28th through May 1 this year. Held at Triple Creek Music Campground, this event features some of the best Bluegrass music in the area. The festival is sponsored by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America and will be celebrating its 30 years history! So if it is a “toe tappin’- knee slappin’, get up and dance” vacation you are looking for, this one can’t be beat!

Smith Mountain Lake Home with a View!

Spring is in the air at Smith Mountain Lake! Well, not quite, but you can begin to sense that spring is just around the corner. With the recent monster snow storm and very wet fall, many lakefront homeowners are thinking about spring clean up! As visions of landscaping dance in your head, there are a few extra considerations to make when you have the pleasure of living on the water!

Let's talk trees! One of the reasons most people buy lakefront property is for the view! As you turn an eye to landscaping, don't forget to carefully plan where you are planting your trees. Knowing how tall a tree will grow and how wide its branches will spread is key in maintaining your line of sight to the water.

You also have to remember that there may be some restrictions to the plants and trees you can remove from your waterfront property. For Smith Mountain Lake residents there are no significant regulations for removing vegetation above the 800 foot contour line. What that basically means is the normal lake level for Smith Mountain Lake is 795 feet above sea level. So on most lots, to avoid the "Project Boundary" (the AEP regulates this area between the lake level and the 800 foot line) you will need work to be five VERITICAL feet above the lake. The usually comes to about 10-15 feet back from the waterline.

Trees do enhance the look and value of your lot, so you want to maintain them. You can get help from a local landscaper to help with tree trimming and removal. Now some neighborhoods may have home owner association rules on tree removal and trimming, so be sure and check with your HOA to find out if there are any restrictions for your area.

If you are clearing a wooded lot, you will have to apply for an Erosion and Sediment permit. There are certain ways erosion has to be controlled at a work site. Again, this is where using a local contractor will come in handy. They should be well aware of any permits needed to clear a lakefront wooded lot. They will also be familiar with typical lakefront erosion controls such as silt fences. Blue Ridge Institute in Ferrum VA

Just a ways down the road from the Smith Mountain Lake Visitors Center on 122 South is the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum in Ferrum, VA. The museum is considered by many to be the center for Blue Ridge Mountain Folklore. The institute was created in 1970 by Ferrum College to preserve the folklore of the Blue Ridge region. They offer more than just exhibits and galleries, but also have a living history farm. The farm is a re-created 1800’s Virginia-German farmstead.

The farm museum is like stepping back in time. You will be able to experience what life was like in the rural Blue Ridge Mountains. The farm’s interpreters dress in period costume and live life as it was in 1800. A thirty mile trip took the whole day or more! As you watch them cook over an open hearth, tend heirloom gardens, and complete the never ending list of farm chores,you realize how fast things move in the modern day.

The exhibits like the Virginia Rocks: The History of Rockabilly in the Commonwealth and other galleries at the museum are free. The Heritage Archives held in the Blue Ridge Institute are a collection of photos and recordings of the area. They even have the Galax Old Time Fiddlers Convention tapes available to listen to. There are admission fees for the farm museum, but you can make reservations for a more “hands on” experience through the different programs they offer.

History runs richly throughout the area. From Jefferson’s Poplar Forest home to the National D-Day Memorial, every generation will find something to interest them. Dirty Dancing In Pembroke, VA!

There are several movies that have been filmed in or around Smith Mountain Lake, but one of the most beloved is Dirty Dancing! With last year’s loss of the film’s star, Patrick Swayze, many are thinking back on the movie with fond memories of their own. You may not know it, but you can stay at the “Kellerman’s Resort”! The actual name of the resort is Mountain Lake Conservancy and Hotel in Pembroke VA.

In 1987, Mountain Lake Hotel was featured in the movie Dirty Dancing. If you are a fan of the movie, then you can’t miss out on experiencing one of the hotel’s Dirty Dancing Weekends! They offer guided tours and even dance lessons to commemorate the movie. In November of 2009, the hotel held a memorial for Patrick Swayze. While filming the movie Swayze stayed in room 232.

On November 21st, they also dedicated “the lift stone” to the memory of the fallen actor. The lift stone was retrieved from the lake in the general location where the water lift scene took place. The Dirty Dancing Weekends have always been a big hit at the hotel, but this year they hold special meaning to those who remember when the movie was filmed here.

Out with the old and in with the new!! New Year’s celebrations at Smith Mountain Lake are in the final preparations for the big party! 2009 has been a year to remember! From the opening of The Southern and Southwest Virginia Fishing Trail at the 2009 Bassmaster Tournament to the record breaking snows of December, a lot has happened this year past. If you are ready to ring out the old year in style, the party at the Mariners Landing can’t be missed!

Mariners Landing is offering great “staycation” packages for the New Year celebration. The annual New Year’s Eve party in Huddleston will be featuring musical guest Dragonfly. Twas the Night after Christmas on Smith Mountain Lake,

Nothing stirred on the water, no boat left a wake.

The Marina’s were quiet, sailboats tucked in with care

In the hopes that quite soon, Spring would be here!

The anglers were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of bass danced in their heads.

I with a glass of a sweet Bedford wine

Was enjoying the quiet and resting my mind.

When out on the lake there arose such clatter

I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew in a dash,

I heard a boat rumble and a bit of a splash.

The moon on the water cast a beautiful glow,

So I could see clearly the objects below!

There on the water, what should appear,

But a man in a boat with eight tiny reindeer?

I hollered at my wife “you’d better come quick!”

For I knew in an instant that this was St Nick!

I pondered a moment, what’s he doing here?

For Christmas has passed already this year.

Then through the dark I heard him call out,

As the reindeer were rocking the boat all about,

Closer and closer to shore the boat came

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen!

“To the middle of the boat, be careful don’t rock,

Or we’ll never make it to the tiny boat dock!”

When they made it to shore every one of them dry,

I let a out a whoop and St Nick heard my cry!

A smile on his lips and a nod of his head,

Soon let me to know I had nothing to dread.

So I asked him the question that burned in my mind

What was here at the lake that he hoped to find?

Imagine my shock when he states his desire,

To Smith Mountain Lake he wants to retire!

“I am looking for a place right here on the lake

A place with a pool, now that would be great!”

And I heard he exclaim as he sailed out of sight,

“Glad your Christmas was great! Now have a great night!”

Breaking Records at Smith Mountain Lake

Smith Mountain Lake and the surrounding area were in the mood to break records this last weekend. Record breaking snow fall blanketed the area leaving some places with over 2 feet of snow! Lake dwellers saw more snow in this one monster storm than what they normally see for the year! Just as an example, in January of 2008, Franklin County saw a total of 4 inches of snow for the whole month! As residents dig out and road crews work to clear secondary roads, here are a few tips to remember for this wintry weather.

If you are going to be driving, take along a small winter weather driving kit. Make sure to include extra blankets, this really can be a life saver if you end up getting stuck in the snow. Keeping extra snack bars in your vehicle can be a good idea too. Of course you will want the basics of a small shovel, ice scraper, and booster cables. Candles and matches are always good to have on hand, but remember to crack the window open to avoid carbon monoxide build up. A bag of kitty litter or sand will come in handy if you run off the road. By spreading some in front of your tires, it will help you get the traction you need to get back on the road.

Smith Mountain Lake doesn’t normally get a lot of snow or ice. More wintry mix is being called for over the holidays, so make sure and plan ahead if you need to travel. Always let someone know where you are going and how you are getting there. Keep your cell phone charged in case you need to call for help.

Dickens of a Christmas in Roanoke!

Believe it or not, there are less than two weeks before Christmas! As you hurry about the last of your holiday shopping, don’t miss the last Friday of Dickens of a Christmas in Roanoke, VA. This 26 year old tradition is fun for the whole family. You may even get that last little gift you have been looking for! December 18th will be the last of this year’s festival.

This Roanoke holiday festival has won a “Best Tradition”-Platinum award from the Roanoker Magazine for the last six years! It has also won two Gold awards for “Best Annual Event”. But the recognition doesn’t stop there! Southeast Tourism Society has also voted it a Top Twenty Event in the Southeast! The Dickens of a Christmas started out as a way to encourage local shopping, but it quickly grew a life of its own! Smith Mountain Lake Flotilla for Toys

Fall is slipping away from the Blue Ridge Mountains, making way for winter and the Christmas season. That means one thing in Smith Mountain Lake; it is time for the Flotilla for Toys boat parade. This year’s event will be held on December 5th at 7pm.

The Flotilla for Toys is the annual holiday boat parade led by the Virginia Dare! The parade starts at the Virginia Dare marina and makes it way to the Bridgewater Plaza and Hales Ford Bridge. The boat parade will then circle down Roanoke Channel past the Smith Mountain Lake State Park. You can even participate aboard the Virginia Dare itself! You can call about reservations at 540-297-7100. Boarding starts at 6:30pm and a cash bar will be available.

Participants and spectators bring unwrapped toys to benefit Lake Christian Ministries to share with local children in need. There are also drop off points throughout the area. This is the 12th year for the boat parade. At last year’s event, over 1400 toys were collected and over 500 area children received Christmas bags filled with toys and clothing.

Don’t miss this spectacular boat parade! Many residents have said it is the highlight of the year. Some even have Holiday parties to coincide with the flotilla and ask guests to bring a toy to donate. It is just another way Smith Mountain Lake gives as a community.

The big day is almost here! The time of year where you enjoy family, friends and lots of comfort foods! It also kicks off some of the best shopping of the season. It is also time for a certain jolly old man dressed in red to show up at Smith Mountain Lake. It is a well known fact he does some of his best Holiday shopping right here!

Santa will be arriving at the lake on November 28th, at 1pm. He will be coming via boat of course and docking at Bridgewater Plaza. He will be available to visit with the children in his workshop from 1-4pm. There will also be free mini golf at Harbortown Mini golf that day starting at noon and ending at four. If you don’t get a chance to catch Santa then, don’t worry! He will be in his workshop December 5th, 12th, and 19th. When he is not at his workshop, Santa will be shopping the Smith Mountain Lake hot spots!

It is rumored that the big guy is using the Smith Mountain Lake Holiday Gift Guide to help him find the perfect presents for those on the nice list! One of his first stops will be Emerson Creek Pottery. He has several patterns on his list like Cranberry and a winter favorite, Snowman. After he picks up the pottery, rumor has it he is headed to the Savoy-Lee winery to pick up a few bottles of Virginia wine to relax with after his deliveries are complete. You don’t have to be Santa to be able to enjoy the holidays at Smith Mountain Lake! There are so many unique gifts available through the local merchants.

The Luray Caverns of Page County

Virginia is full of natural and manmade wonders! From the Natural Bridge to Smith Mountain Lake, there is no end to all the wonderful things to see and do in Virginia. Nestled in the Shenandoah National Park, north of Roanoke, is Luray Caverns. Discovered in 1878, the Luray Caverns are breathtaking! Rock formations "sing" and bridal veils, the formations are as amazing as the day they were discovered!

It all started with a sink hole. A gust of air from a limestone sinkhole blew out a candle held by Andrew Campbell as he and friends were looking for caves in the area. What they ended up discovering was the largest series of caverns on the East. Purchasing the land at public auction, the men began to prepare the cave for visitors. The rest is history!

In 1880 The Smithsonian Institution sent nine scientists to examine the cavern system. They were amazed at the stalactite and stalagmite formations they found. One of the most popular formations is the Stalacpipe Organ! Located in the Cathedral, you really can play music on these stalactites! Using a system of electronically controlled rubber mallets you can hear the rocks make music! It has even been featured on Ripley's Believe it or Not!

Giant Hall, Titania's Veil, Dream Lake, and Fried Eggs are just a few of the other amazing cave formations you can see when you visit Luray Caverns. Buy A Smith Mountain Lake Home, Get a Tax Break!

The deadline for the First Time Home Buyer Tax credit was fast approaching, but we have good news!! The $8000 Tax Credit program has been extended! Not only do first time buyers now have until April 2010 to choose a home, but those current home owners who are looking to buy a home may also qualify for a new $6,500 credit! There is a little something for most everyone in the extended program!

If you were worried about missing the November 30th deadline, you now have until April 30th, 2010 to be under contract to buy a Smith Mountain Lake home and get a tax break! You can schedule your closing anytime through June 30th, 2010! The extra two months to close will hopefully avoid the backlog of closings agents have seen as the original deadline approached.

If you are a first time home buyer, not much has changed in the extension. Any home that can be used as a primary residence is eligible under the program. Even houseboats qualify under the extension! You cannot purchase a home from a family member and qualify for the tax credit. Income guidelines are $125,000 for single tax payers and $225,000 for those who are filing jointly. To be considered a first time home buyer you still must not have owned a principal residential property in the last three years. But with the new extension, if you own a home, you may still qualify for a tax credit!

Repeat Buyers are now eligible for a tax credit up to $6,500 on the purchase of a home. To be considered a repeat buyer, you will need to have owned and resided in a home for five consecutive years out of the last eight years. The income guidelines are the same as a first time buyer: $125,000 for single filers and $225,000 for married couples filing jointly. You can purchase any primary residence up to $800,000 and earn a 10% tax credit up to $6,500. For the first time buyers the highest amount of the credit is $8,000!

Smith Mountain Lake: Coffee and Art Blend Together

Coffee houses are becoming America’s front porch as neighbors and friends gather to share a cup of coffee or exotic teas while they catch up on the local news. At Smith Mountain Lake you can also enjoy some local art with that cup of joe! Just head over to the Westlake Towne Center and stop in at Solid Ground Coffee and Tea! They have begun displaying the work of local artists in their shop.

You can find the works of new artists as well as professional art work adorning the walls of the coffee shop. They will be rotating the art every 6 weeks or so and some piece are definitely for sale! The owners; Robert Carkin and Christopher Spoon, wanted to give Smith Mountain Lake’s local talent a place to display their work. But they are not stopping with art work. Live music is in the works as well!

They are planning open mike nights for Friday and Saturday nights. If you play an instrument or sing, the stage can be yours! You can even play your own original music! Natural Bridge of Virginia

Just north of Bedford County Virginia, you can find one of nature’s most amazing displays: Virginia’s Natural Bridge. Twenty stories high, this solid rock display was made by nature’s own hand. So take a drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway and enjoy the glorious colors of fall as you head to this wonder of nature! The next few weeks are the peak of fall color in this area of Virginia!

Place of History

There is a lot of history here, starting 300 years ago with the Native Americans of the area. This natural bridge was a sacred site for the area Monacan Tribe. The Cedar Creek carved a 215 foot high, 90 feet wide arch through the mountain, creating a solid rock bridge over the water. Many believe George Washington carved his initials in the arch during a 1750 surveying trip. Thomas Jefferson purchased the bridge from King George III in 1774 for 20 shillings, along with 157 acres of land. Jefferson called it, “the most Sublime of nature’s works.” Jefferson even built a two room cabin and began to use it as a retreat. Many notable figures of history stayed there: James Monroe, Sam Houston and Henry Clay, to name a few.

Family fun at the Bridge

Today there are many things to do if you decide to spend the day at the Natural Bridge. Now through November you can enjoy the Corn Maze! You can “get lost in a good time” with the whole family. Scarecrows are scattered throughout the 6 acres of the maze; any child who finds 10 wins a prize! There is also the Drama of Creation light show each night. This has been a bridge tradition since 1927! There is so much to do. You can enjoy candlelight tours of the Old City Cemetery, Spooky Ghost stories, and checking out the lovely hues of autumn leaves, all without leaving the area!

Gravestones Talk!
On Saturday evening, you can choose from lots of great things to do with the family. If you love history and stories of days gone by, then the Old City Cemetery Candlelight tours is right up your alley! The Old City Cemetery can be toured any day of the week from dusk until dawn. The daytime visits are free! The Mourning Museum is open 11am -3pm everyday of the week through October. There are other museums on the site to tour as well. But if you want to enjoy an interactive experience then the Candle light tour is the way to go! Actors dress up as the cemetery residents and share their story. It is quite an experience! Spooky Tales!
If you want a more spooky experience, then spend Saturday at Peaks of Otter Winery! During the day you can enjoy a beautiful tour of the winery and enjoy the Peak Foliage Open House. It is FREE from noon to 5pm! Enjoy fresh cider and apples; try some of the unique wines of the vineyard! Then head over to the Peaks of Otter Lodge for the final evening program of the season: Spooky Ghost Stories! One of our fine Park Rangers will tell “home brewed” ghost stories based on the legend and lore of the mountains! Costumes welcome!! There will be free candy too! So bring the little ones out for a fun night starting at 7:30pm in the Flat Top Room.

Starry Night!
Lastly, if you want to just sit back and enjoy the stars then head over to Hickory Hills Vineyard! This free event starts at 6pm on October 24th. Live music will play until the sun goes down and the stars come out! Local astronomer Jim Schauberger will be on hand with his telescope to give a tour of the clear night sky! The night tour will begin at 10PM, bring the kids, the blanket and dress warm! You can even a picnic under the stars! If you have binoculars or even your own telescope, bring those too and enjoy the beauty of Virginia’s night skies!!

This weekend is the annual Apple Harvest Festival at Gross’ Orchard. This looks to be a fun family day and the best part about it is admission is FREE! Add the Free Cider and Entertainment and this is a day you do not want to miss! Gross’ Orchard is located at 6817 Wheats Valley Rd in Bedford VA.

Located at the foot of the beautiful Peaks of Otter, this family orchard has been in operation since before the turn of the century. The Orchard is now being run by the third and fourth generations of the family. The Orchard specializes in mountain grown peaches and apples. The breezes are more reliable in autumn and with lighter boat traffic, you can tack to your heart’s content!! On most Saturdays and Sundays in October, you can catch a sailboat race! There is even a sailing school right on the lake! Yes, just because you have to trade your swimsuit for a jacket, doesn’t mean that enjoying being on the lake is over!

Dealing with the “Rip Rap” at Smith Mountain Lake

I know what you are thinking, but no, we do not have a lot of “riff raff” at Smith Mountain Lake! What we do have is “Rip Rap” shorelines. Rip Rap is a way to combat erosion along the banks of the lake. Rocks are put into place to help keep soil erosion down to a minimum. So, how can you tell if you need to control erosion, and if so what is the best way to go about that and safeguard your property’s value?

What is Rip Rap?

Rip Rap is rock or other material used to protect shorelines, streambeds, bridge abutments, pilings and other shoreline structures against scour, water or ice erosion. It works by deflecting the force or energy of the water from soft soil or sandy banks. Rip Rap rock can be seen in sea walls and even under overpasses along the highways to prevent erosion.

The first thing you need to do to determine if you property qualifies for erosion control on Smith Mountain Lake is check out the Shoreline Management guide. Not all lots on the lake qualify or need erosion control. If you have a beach or a very gentle slope from the land into the water, you probably don’t need to even worry about it. If you are lucky enough to have a beautiful beach, the last thing you want to do is put a pile of rocks on it! But if you are having an erosion problem, this simple and inexpensive protection can be invaluable! Some property owners have reported losing 10%-20% of their lots to erosion if they don’t take this precaution!

Do You Think You May Have Active Erosion?

It doesn’t matter if you have a flat lot or a steep lot. The problem can stem from currents to how much boat traffic you have in your part of the Lake. If you think you may have an erosion problem, you can contact a local landscape expert to come and take a look for you. They can let you know if you have active erosion on your lot. If you do, then contact American Electric Power (AEP). AEP can issue permits to deal with structures for erosion control. Right here in Smith Mountain Lake/ Moneta we have Moneta /Smith Mountain Lake Community Market. This market is a season market open through October 31st. Roanoke Natural Food Co-Op has locally grown food available all year round and is open to members and non-members to purchase fresh and organic produce.

“Going Green” is a very popular catch phrase. Many people are doing their best to “buy organic” in an effort to be more environmentally friendly. The Westlake Farmer’s Market (next to Lake Inn Motel) is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 10.The Bedford Farmer’s Market in Centertown Bedford is open Tuesdays 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.The Farmer’s Market in downtown Rocky Mount is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Celebrating Thomas Jefferson in Forest, VA

It isn’t often you to participate in the retirement celebration for an American President. This weekend, October 3rd, you can! Poplar Forest will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s retirement and his return to Virginia. The Richmond Symphony will be entertaining on the beautiful lawn of Poplar Forest, Jefferson’s secluded retreat. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door, they also include a catered reception on the lawns of the retreat.
Jefferson retired from public life in 1809. He returned to what is now the town of Forest in Bedford County VA. The home at Poplar Forest was one of his greatest designs, but unknown to many outside the area. The home itself is described as such: “Poplar Forest is considered Jefferson’s most mature architectural masterpiece. At Poplar Forest, elements from ancient, Renaissance Palladian and 18th century French architecture, as well as British and Virginian design, fuse into a harmonious whole.” It has also been designated a National Historic Landmark.
This weekend also offers a chance to visit with “Jefferson” himself. Bill Barker of Colonial Williamsburg will visit with guests as late president! Mr. Barker has portrayed Jefferson for the last 20 years. He has even portrayed him at the Palace of Versailles and the White House. It isn’t often you can spend the afternoon with Thomas Jefferson and the Richmond Symphony!

2009 Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival is Here!

If you have been looking for a reason to come check out the area, there is no better time than this weekend! September 26 and 27 is the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival at LakeWatch Plantation! It is still not too late to buy advance tickets at a discount! You can even buy them online, but hurry, advance tickets are available until September 23rd!

The SML Wine Festival is a favorite event and one of the most popular with visitors! Wineries from across the state come to offer samples of their top wines. Add to that wonderful food and live music and you have a great weekend ahead of you! With so many wines and so little time, how do you know what wines to sample first?

Well, first off, if you are going to be sampling a lot of wines: bring a designated driver! Law Enforcement will be present to make sure everyone stays safe. Secondly, bring your ID! You would hate to miss out on sampling award winning wines. This may sound simple, but they are very important tips!

When it comes to sampling, you may want to check out the different vendors BEFORE you start. Taking a stroll around the Festival will give you an idea of what wines are available to try. With such a large variety of wines, some people even have a little notebook to make notes in so they know which wines they want to go back and sample. They can also make note of what they liked the best! This may sound serious, but with such diverse wines to choose from, it really helps!

Just as an example, let’s take a look at a Peaks of Otter Wine; Chili Dawg. This is an apple wine with chili pepper wine blended in. This is one HOT DAWG! Of course it isn’t as hot as their Kiss the Devil wine. That one is made from 30 varieties of peppers! The name says it all! Then if you take a look at some of the Hickory Hill wines, you will see how broad the difference in wines can be! Smith Mountain Lake Redbud is a sweet dark rose wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Vidal Blanc. There is also a wonderful “breakfast wine”, Smith Mountain Lake Sunset, it is a great dessert or brunch wine (and the 2007 Virginia Governor’s Cup Winner).

There is almost no better time to visit Smith Mountain Lake than during the SML Wine Festival! With over 20 wineries participating, you can truly see and taste the best of Virginia!
